Shelia, Land Army Veteran
Our DMWS Welfare Officer (WO) received a referral for a Land Army Veteran, Sheila, who had suffered a stroke. Sheila is proud of her independence and sees herself as the one who should help others. This meant it was not easy for her to ask for help or identify as being socially isolated, yet as she confirmed about our DMWS WO Ashley kindly funded by the Masonic Charitable Foundation.
Sheila was struggling getting in and out of bed so was sleeping on a sturdy, hard-backed chair and was very uncomfortable.
Her independence was very important to her as she had lived on her own for some time, being the one who helped others in the community. Our DMWS WO provided Sheila with a lot of emotional support but also a supported referral to another local charity to help with the cost of a new electric reclining chair. Not only could Sheila now use the chair to snooze in but also to support her posture and help to get in and out of the chair without fear of falling.
Key Outcomes:
- Reduced Social Isolation
- Improvement in Physical and Mental Well Being
- Reduced Stress
- Supported referral
