DMWS are delighted to announce that the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust have awarded crucial funds to support our existing Armed Forces Welfare Service in Nottingham under the Force for Change programme. Based in Nottingham University Hospital, these funds mean we can continue to deliver person-centred support to 39 members of the Armed Forces on a healthcare pathway and 50 family members/carers.

Thanks to AFCFT, we will continue to:

  • Provide person-centred support to identify and support non-clinical needs
  • Reduce stress, isolation, and loneliness
  • Improve the ability to live independently
  • Reduce stress and anxiety and identify additional mental health issues
  • Increase self-confidence, resilience, and self-management
  • Reduce hospital readmission rates
  • Reduce delays in transfer of care and improve discharge process from hospital
  • Improve collaboration and partnership with existing statutory and third sector services

DMWS will work in collaboration with the VCHA Armed Forces Clinical Champion at Nottingham University Hospital to receive referrals and deliver services. DMWS are already well-connected in the Midlands thanks to our position as Strategic Lead for the AFCFT VPPP programme, as well as through our participation in other portfolios across the UK. We can draw upon these strong connections to maximise outcomes for the beneficiaries of this project.

In 2021, DMWS supported 398 beneficiaries in Nottinghamshire with issues affecting their wellbeing. The most prevalent are meaningful engagement, signposting, liaison with health staff, and support to family.

Thank you to the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust for making this support possible.

About Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS)

Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS) is an independent charity providing medical welfare to those who have, and continue to, operate on the frontline. We place trained professional welfare officers in locations throughout the UK and Cyprus to deliver much-needed additional support for those who are on the clinical pathway. DMWS is committed to providing the highest level of welfare support to those in need, promoting their physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.

Whether it is a new or pre-existing issue, our service is for anyone undergoing treatment for a health-related issue. By providing support in a range of settings, our staff are committed to promoting and preserving the health and wellbeing of those who have dedicated their lives to serving our communities. In addition, they are committed to enabling them to reach their full potential. This can speed up discharge from hospital, help patients recover more quickly, and reduce the likelihood of readmission or the need for onward referral.

DMWS has a long and proud history of supporting the military in times of need, offering expert help and advice to those affected by health-related issues. Through its comprehensive services and outstanding dedication, DMWS has become an integral part of the armed forces community, offering invaluable support to the armed forces community at their critical time of need.
