We are looking for someone with strong people skills, who can work independently and as part of a national team, to join DMWS in the North East of England.

DMWS is an international charity that has been providing medical welfare support to the Armed Forces Community for over 78 years. We are looking for someone with great interpersonal skills, compassion, and the ability to handle complex cases, to join one of our new projects.

The project will embed a medical welfare officer (MWO) in the Northeast delivery area, located to engage with both community services and NHS Trusts, to achieve a range of outcomes, connecting veterans to mental health, wellbeing, and community services, and promoting and improving the awareness of the needs of veterans within the mental health care arena.

The role will:

  • Increase awareness of veterans across relevant NHS trust sites
  • Liaise with Local Authority Armed Forces Leads to ensure effective referral routes into services
  • Collaborate with relevant third sector organisations across various locations (military and non-military charities); including veterans community networks and groups in the region
  • Develop a referral network with social prescribers
  • Enable and sustain assisted referrals between services – a step above signposting
  • Build rapport with existing local/regional statutory services for armed forces personnel and their families, for example: – TILs, CTS, HIS, Veterans UK and the Transition service etc.
  • Provide dynamic, flexible, and responsive resources to veterans in need of mental health support and provide focused delivery on the needs of the local and regional community.
